The Five Colors of Our Nature Walk is a storybook for toddlers and children. Our author (Latisha Jones) takes her readers on a journey to the great outdoors. Our two main characters, Joshua and his mother, head out on a nature walk to learn all about the many colors of leaves. From there, children will learn to count, about colors, and of course about the fall season. In the end, the book is intended to strike a chord in your child; they will want to head outdoors!
When you read the author’s bio at the end of the book, you are instantly struck by the level of education that she has, as well as the number of years she’s been working in Early Childhood Education. She’s using that education to be very intentional in The Five Colors of Our Nature Walk, and she does so very professionally. She helps your child or toddler discover a great deal about nature, colors, and even a bit about numbers. What’s more impressive is that she does it from the pages of a short storybook.
This review has to spend a substantial time talking about the illustrations in this book. The reason is twofold:
- The realism in the characters
- The colors
Sean Winburn, the illustrator, has truly captured something special with his artwork. I love the simplicity of the faces in the characters, and yet somehow I recognize them as real people (and not simply as cartoons). As I said, the colors are one of my favorite parts; that’s because they’re very vibrant and they add to what my little guy learned as we went through the book.
In the end, this is a fun little storybook for toddlers and children. It has solid messaging and the illustrations are realistic and fun. There’s really nothing negative to say here at all and so it’s easy to recommend it as a buy. In fact, Latisha managed to entirely fund her Kickstarter campaign, which is a feat on its own. What’s even more impressive is that this book has been featured on Fox, NBC, ABC, and CBS! I don’t think it’s every book out there that gets featured this way.
