Klara the Cow Who Knows How to Bow is an incredibly cute story about a cow who’s a little different than others. Given that you’re reading this review, I’ll assume that you know why she’s a little different; she can bow! Now, Klara is so special that Prince Swede (love the name) ends up offering to buy her from the farmer. In the end, the Prince realizes that no amount of money can buy such a special cow. As a result, your child will end up learning a great lesson about how being different is great and makes each and every one of us special. I also think your child will learn a great lesson about sticking with your friends, or in this case…your cows.
After reading the book the first time, what struck me is just how important this message is for our children to hear time and time again. We all know how people tend to like what they perceive as normal, and it’s great to see a book that drives home a message opposite to this. It’s such a great message that I spent time after reading the book with my little guy talking about what it meant. He grasped that Klara was different and that it was a good thing for her and for the Prince. I love when a message hits home.
Probably my favorite thing about the book is what I would call overwhelming positivity. There’s nothing negative in the book; there’s no antagonist. The Prince comes and tries to buy Klara but his reaction when he’s told that she’s not for sale is just to leave well enough alone. It would have been easy for our author, Kimberley Kleczka, to take the easy road and make the Prince react poorly. Instead, our author sticks to her positivity theme, and I think it all works out for the best.
The book maintains a completely fun attitude. There’s nothing in this book that isn’t fun. Every rhyme that the author employs is fun, the names are fun, Klara is fun, the illustrations are fun, and…even the font is fun! The amount of fun and cute things in this book just drives home the positive nature of the book even more.
Speaking of rhymes, the author does this flawlessly. We’ve spoken about it many times on Kids Fun Channel, but rhyming and rhythm are extremely important for your child’s retention and the overall enjoyability of the book. Each page contains at least one rhyme, and the entire book is written almost such that you could sing it to your child (more on that idea later).
Another thing that I loved is the way the illustrations are handled. As we mentioned, these are fun pictures that are created by our illustrator (Apoorva Dingar). Apoorva has created very vibrant illustrations through exceptional color choices. She has also created engaging pictures through the faces of every single one of the characters. Klara herself is cute and has a personality all to herself. You feel like she’s a true cow (she even has great calves…) and yet you end up in tune with her as a character. I think the illustrations have really helped all of that come together.
Now, onto some of the extras that come with this book. And trust me when I say this; there’s a lot. Klara comes with her very own song that you can view below:
On top of that cute little diddy is an app/game created to go along with this book! I shouldn’t have had fun with it because I’m supposed to be an adult, but it was kind of fun dressing Klara. Click here for that game.
There’s more too. There’s an audio book, and there are multiple language versions of the book. There is also an instrumental version of the sing-along song above that you can use to have as a sort of karaoke version for a classroom. Kimberly also has a pretty substantial website with other songs, books, and a great deal more at Koolamundo.com.
If you haven’t already run off to Amazon to buy Kimberley Kleczka’s latest book (and all those extras we mentioned), Klara The Cow Who Knows How To Bow, then go on and head there now! This is a fantastic children’s book that you will love because of its great moral message. Your child will love it because it’s fun and a great little story, there’s great rhyming, Klara is a fun character, and you get access to all the amazing extras. It’s a great deal when you consider all you get for a couple of pretty low prices (the Kindle ebook is under $2 USD and the paperback version will cost you under $10 USD). On top of that, if you’re on a Kindle, the book will be free for the next 5 days (Nov 21 – Nov 25)!
Until next time, Smash, Crash, and Learn!
