We Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Manners is what I would call a double book. There’s really two distinct groups that will enjoy the book: mothers and young children. The book is about a group of silly and rambunctious children who would like to live their lives ignoring the very idea of manners. They believe they’re on top of the world and can ignore their parent’s pleas to have/use manners. That is, until the very end of the book when they realize the err of their ways (as they grow up) and begin to treat people right and use their manners.
The author, J.R. Miller, has produced what I would say is a pretty witty book. I know that as I was reading the book to my little toddler, both of us were smiling. Now, I’m pretty sure he was smiling simply at the thought of ignoring manners and causing trouble, while I was clearly smiling at the book and the way it was written. I was smiling because it’s just fun and fairly funny. The author describes the book as tongue-in-cheek, and I’d agree with that description exactly.
One of the things I enjoyed about the book the most is the cadence and the rhythm the book is written in. It makes it quite an easy read for the parent, and it helps the child to retain as much about the book as is possible. I feel like I’m reading a poem or even a song at certain points and it makes it incredibly enjoyable, especially when you’re having a giggle on almost every page.
Probably the best thing about the book is the way the illustrations work with the story. I love that the pages filled with text go hand in hand color wise with the related illustration. I also love the style of each illustration, which feel fun and almost out of control; there’s no picture in the book that I don’t think adds to the story.
All in all, this is an extremely fun book that appeals to both adults and children alike. I’d say that almost any age child (although I’m personally saying it fits 2-10) would enjoy reading this book with their mother or father. I also know personally that parents will enjoy reading this to their kids, as the kids go from laughing and imagining to realizing that someday…they will have their stinkin’ manners.
In the end, it’s pretty easy to recommend such a fun and silly book. Head on over to Jacqueline Miller’s website, where she’ll sell you a copy of her book for $16.99 USD (although now it’s on sale for $11.50 USD – Nov 2, 2016). Her website also has an incredible amount of resources, including a free e-course, a blog, and a number of other products for you to look at.
