Visit Alook’s Cool Place in Outer Space is another children’s storybook from one of our favorite authors, Kimberley Kleczka. Kimberley has produced a series of books about Alook and his travels throughout the world but in this book we follow Alook home. Alook, in case you didn’t catch this in the title, lives in outer space at a pretty cool place. The book tells us all about this cool place and the way they live. From a dragon, to a game called Lutor, to some interesting siblings, and finally to a blue moon, it’s a pretty wild environment that’s described in the book; it’s a lot of fun!
The entire Alook series of books is about diversity. Diversity in our great world, and different characteristics in the way people live and experience their different lives. Visit Alook’s Cool Place In Outer Space describes the different ways that Alook and his family (and friends) live in their interesting world. The entire series of books are intended to open your child’s mind to entirely different ways of living in a multicultural world, as well as learning about different countries and their traditions. The author has even stated to me that this is her objective each and every time she writes.
What I love best about this book is the way it ties the whole series together. It really gives you some detail about a character that’s been featured before. If your child loved any of the other books in the series, then they’ll definitely love this book. If your child hasn’t read any of the other books, well then I’d say that you could buy the series and know that you’re going to have a character that’s loved by your child. You’re also going to be guaranteed to have a child wondering about all the different parts of the world and the amazing cultures that are out there.
The other thing that really strikes me about this book is just how fun and colorful the illustrations are. Now, the Alook books are normally colorful…don’t get me wrong. However, this book’s look is nothing short of incredible. Don’t believe me, have a look at the picture below and tell me you’ve ever seen a crazier bird. I mean, I guess I’d call it a flamingo mixed with an ostrich, but I really can’t nail it down. I think that’s the essence of these books captured. They just make children think about wild and fun things that they’ve probably never considered before.
As I stated previously, we have reviewed a number of books by Kimberley Kleczka in the past (Alook’s Dance in France, Luna and Alook’s Funny Food Book, Klara The Cow Who Knows How to Bow). Each book really works to develop the idea of Koolamnundo, which means “it’s a kool world”. They also help children see what multiculturalism and diversity are.
As is always the case with Kimberley’s books, this book is accompanied by a number of extras. She truly brings together a package of products that are sold with all of her books. For example, here’s the trailer video:
Also, since it’s the Christmas season, Kimberley’s also put together her Koolamundo Christmas song! Here it is on YouTube:
There are also a few “Kool” facts at the back of the book that are just extra content for you to share with your child. These facts give you a bit of insight into the true nature of our author and just how she thinks.
Overall, this is another great book in the Koolamundo series created by Kimberley Kleczka. She really is developing a great style, fantastic characters, and a fantastic series for you to share with your child. My little guy has enjoyed every book in the series and I’ve noticed that he tells me all about the different ways people (or in the case of Alook, birds) live. I love that he’s getting that the world is a big interesting, diverse place.
