This Is My Cat is a cute little story book by Sherry Skovgaard that’s a lot like a nursery rhyme. The story starts off with a little girl and her cat. The cat startles a dog, who in turn bites a mailman, who then spills his mail, that takes off in the wind (and travels across town). From there, we follow a cause and effect type story that ends with all the kids in town getting a giant outdoor water slide. Of course, in the end, the little girl hugs her cat and tells us all that she loves her cat.
My favorite thing about this book is simply how it’s built. The cause and effect story line makes it perfect for young children. It keeps their attention and it drives home understanding of what’s being read to them. What’s more, I found myself and my little guy giggling more and more as the book went on. Each effect was a little more fun than the last, and each one built on the previous.
One of the other things that’s great about this book is that it’s really focused on spatial and time based learning (above, under, before, after, etc.). If your child is struggling a little with understanding some of those concepts, this book really puts it all together with the word (example: over) with the picture (kids running over a bridge). It’s a great learning tool for those types of concepts.
The other thing that struck me about the book is that it ends on such a great positive note. It would have been easy for our author Sherry Skovgaard to leave the book on a bit of a down note. See, as you move through the pages, the effects get more and more substantial and could easily lead to a catastrophe type of outcome. Instead of this, the kids in the town end up with a massive water slide to play in. It’s a great way to say that everything works out in the end, and I love this positive ending.
As an aside, there’s an extra in this book that I absolutely love. On each and every page, the cat can be found as part of a game with your little one. In lots of cases, the cat is hiding in what I’d call plain sight. However, there’s a few illustrations where it’s pretty tough to spot the little kitten. Once I showed my little guy that this was a part of the book, he couldn’t stop searching on each and every page. It kept him engaged and I love it when I find books that do this.
The illustrations in the book are nothing short of cute. They remind me of an older, 90’s style cartoon. They contain cute and relatively simple characters that are fun to look at but don’t draw attention away from the story. I like that choice because the story is simple and it gives children an opportunity to really learn.
Now, that doesn’t mean that the illustrations are boring. Quite the opposite, actually. The scenes in the book are full of detail and color that help tell the story. They’re bright and fun, and I couldn’t find one page that I could have improved. That’s pretty impressive, because I’m pretty particular!
Sherry Skovgaard is a children’s author that’s built a collection of books ready for your young child. This is My Cat is a fun addition to her line of books and I think it’s a great addition to any parent’s library of books. It has a positive ending, I love the illustrations, and the style (cause and effect) is nothing short of great. At $9.25 USD for a paperback version of the book, it’s relatively inexpensive. As a result, I’m able to recommend this book for purchase from Amazon. Head over and pick up this child’s cat book now!
