Peter & The Green Monster is a toddler and children’s storybook about a giant green monster who appears to be coming after little Peter. Peter is, like most children, scared of what’s to come when he hears The Green Monster coming into his house and his room. We experience Peter’s fear as The Green Monster moves closer and closer and seems to be trying to scare and/or hurt our little protagonist. Then the Green Monster fakes that he’s hurt himself and Peter takes pity on him; then he taps him on the shoulder and says “Tag! Peter, now you’re it!”
Probably the thing that grabs you immediately about this book is the sheer amount of end rhymes employed by our author, Samantha Jackson. Samantha ensures every two lines has a rhyme and that the book can be read almost as a song would be sang. As a result of this style, the book becomes a very easy read despite the fact that there are actually quite a large number of words. Also, as we’ve spoke about many times the rhyming and rhythm that you can maintain while reading helps your child to retain more about the story.
The illustrations in the book really drive towards younger children. They’re incredibly cute, simple, and bright. Each item on each and every page is illustrated this way, and it makes reading the book fun. The Green Monster is obviously the star of the book and the way he’s drawn and colored makes him a memorable character. His feet are like a chicken’s while he looks cuddly and warm all throughout his body and its fur coat.
The thing that’s most impactful in this book is that it will likely generate just that little bit of fear in your little one. It’s the kind of fear that’s generally a good kind. That is, unless you have a child with one of those imaginations that never stop…I don’t so this wasn’t a problem for me. It’s important to note that there is nothing bad that actually happens in the book. It’s just a fun build up that’ll grab your child’s attention and scare them a little. However, at the end of the book when you both realize that it’s all a big game of tag, you will both laugh.
Samantha Jackson and her Editor Brock Snyder have put together a cute little book that is fun, cute, and plays a little with your child’s emotions. It’s a simple book that can be read in just a few minutes and all of the illustrations are cute and enjoyable. It’s also one of the lowest price books we’ve seen in a while, with the Kindle version being $3.01 USD! Here’s where you can go to purchase Peter & The Green Monster on Amazon!
